Fluorides & Nitrides
Fluoride is created when salts from the element fluorine combine with minerals in soil or rocks. Fluoride salts are typically white or colorless, odorless and have distinctive bitter tastes. Fluoride compounds are mainly used in industrial applications and for specialty optical materials such as antireflection coating.
Nitride compounds are a large family of nitrogen-containing compounds that are formed by combining nitrogen with less electronegative elements such as boron, silicon, and most metals. Titanium nitride and silicon nitride are used as cutting materials and hard coatings.
